Privacy Policy

The short version

We collect what the features you use need, and nothing for advertising. We don’t sell your data, run ads, or include third-party analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs. You can use Saqal without an account, in which case your hifz stays on your phone. If you delete your account, we delete your data.

Who we are

anonymuslim (“we”, “us”) makes Saqal and other apps listed on anonymuslim.com. This policy covers those apps and this website. Contact: support@anonymuslim.com.

Using Saqal without an account

Your progress, settings and recordings stay on your phone. The app still downloads Quran text, translations and recitation audio from content servers, which see your IP address like any website does.

What we collect with an account

• Account: your email address and, if you sign in with Apple or Google, the identifier and the name that service shares with us. We never see your Apple or Google password.
• Profile: your username and anything optional you add: name, bio, age, years memorizing, memorization level, profile photo, whether your account is private, and your recitation preferences (voice, maqams, pace, riwayah).
• Hifz progress: what you’ve memorized and your review schedule, synced so it’s on all your devices.
• Recordings and videos you upload: the files, the ayahs they cover and their timings. Our own speech service processes them to find the ayah timings.
• Social activity: who you follow, follow requests, blocks, reports, likes, reactions (such as “JazakAllahu khayran”), saved collections, and your “Share my progress” choice. If you share progress, the people you choose see your percent of the Quran, pages and juz (never streaks or daily activity).
• Discover activity: when you view, play, download, like, react to or save recitations in Discover, we record it to rank the feed and to show creators how their posts are doing. Only the creator sees a post’s counts. Individual events are deleted after 90 days; only totals (such as a post’s play count) are kept.
• Notifications: if you allow them, a device token so Apple or Google can deliver our notifications to you.
• Server logs: our hosting keeps standard request logs, including IP addresses, for security and to keep the service running.
• Error reports: when the app hits an error, it sends us what went wrong, which screen it was on, the app version and your phone’s system version, so we can fix it. Reports don’t include your account, your recitations or what you were reading, and we keep them for 30 days.
• Problem reports: when you send one from the app, we receive your message, the email you give us for a reply (if any), and your app version, phone OS, reciter and theme. It reaches us as an email to our support inbox.

Your microphone

The app uses your microphone only when you choose to:

• Reciting during review: on iPhone, your recitation is checked on your phone by our own speech model, once it has downloaded; the audio never leaves your phone. Until then, and on Android, live checking uses your phone’s built-in speech recognition (from Apple or Google), which may process the audio on Apple’s or Google’s servers under their privacy policies. We don’t receive or keep this audio.
• Recording a recitation: the recording stays on your phone unless you upload it.

What others can see

Your username, profile photo and public posts are visible to other users. A private account’s posts are visible only to approved followers. If you turn on “Show to guests” for a post, people without an account can see it too.

Moderation

To keep the community safe, uploaded photos and videos are checked automatically (with Amazon Rekognition), and content that is flagged or reported may be reviewed by a person. We may remove content or accounts that break our Terms.

Help improve ayah detection (optional)

Off by default. If you turn it on, recordings you approve and your timing corrections are stored to improve our speech models. They’re kept under a random identifier, not linked to your account, so they stay after you delete your account and we can’t single them out later. Turn it off any time; nothing new is shared after that.

What we don’t collect or do

• Your location or contacts
• Advertising identifiers, or tracking across other apps and websites
• Third-party analytics, advertising or crash-reporting SDKs
• Selling or renting your data, or sharing it for advertising

Services we rely on

We share data only with services that run the app for us:

• Amazon Web Services: hosting, storage, sign-in (Amazon Cognito) and moderation
• Apple and Google: sign-in if you choose it, and delivering notifications
• Content servers for Quran text, translations and recitation audio

We may also disclose information if the law requires it or to protect people’s safety.

Where your data lives

On Amazon Web Services in the United States (us-east-2, Ohio). Public media is delivered through Amazon’s worldwide content network. If you use Saqal from outside the US, your data is transferred to and processed in the US.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep your data while your account is open. Delete a post and its files are removed. Delete your account in the app (Settings → Account → Delete Account) or by emailing us, and we remove your account, profile, progress, posts, recordings, videos and social activity from our servers. Some may remain in backups for up to 30 days before being purged.

Not deleted: anonymous contributions described above, totals that no longer identify you (such as play counts on others’ posts), and anything we must keep by law.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it, by emailing support@anonymuslim.com. We’ll respond within 30 days. Depending on where you live (for example the EU, the UK or California) you may have further rights under local law, which we honour.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit and stored with our hosting provider’s protections, and access is limited to what running the service needs. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you, we’ll tell you as the law requires.

Children

Accounts are for people 13 and older; users under 18 should have a parent’s or guardian’s permission. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy materially, we’ll update the date at the top and tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
